Frequently Asked Questions

SEL for Grades 6-12

  • Research shows that for best results, explicit social and emotional learning instruction should take place 2-3 times per week for at least 20 minutes per session. Each Emozi® Middle or High School lesson is designed to be delivered in 30 minutes and includes four optional 30-minute activities to supplement student learning on the topic.

  • Emozi® is aligned to the CASEL framework and the Common Core State Standards (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies), Health Education State Standards, Financial Literacy Standards, 21st Century Careers, and Computer Literacy Standards.

  • Yes! SEL is best embedded in everyday learning. The Interdisciplinary Activities in each lesson provide examples of ways to integrate SEL into Art, English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and other core academic classes, such as engineering challenges and poetry activities.

  • Yes! We offer a self-paced, online training session to help you get ready to implement the program with success in your classroom. The best part is that it’s included in your classroom implementation package purchase!

  • Emozi® includes unique grade-specific, developmentally appropriate lessons. For use of the program in classrooms spanning multiple grade levels, we suggest that the students be divided into smaller groups based on age, grade, or development level when delivering lessons. Utilizing differentiation strategies included in every lesson may also be useful.

  • Racism, stereotypes, and prejudice are broadly covered under the “social awareness” competency by CASEL. This domain also includes topics such as perspective-taking, empathy, appreciating diversity, and having respect for others. Several lessons in Emozi® cover these topics.

  • We offer a variety of ways to help you continue your own social and emotional learning. Our monthly newsletter contains information about the program and social and emotional learning news. We also share tips on our Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube channels with other ideas for and from educators.

  • Each classroom implementation package is bundled with online training (a $100 value) and includes a comprehensive set of materials designed to guide a teacher through program implementation easily and effectively. Components include a comprehensive Teachers Guide, 25 Student Guides, 3 Mentor Texts, a Classroom Poster, and 2 classroom sets of DESSA-mini assessment forms. Additional online materials provide presentation slides for every lesson, send-home letters for parents (in English, French, and Spanish), and other supplemental resources.

Emozi® Middle School SEL

  • The program was designed to be easily implemented in a variety of middle school settings, including homeroom, advisory, health, study hall, or even ELA!

  • Bringing in literature via the Socratic Seminars allows teachers to embed SEL in academics. We suggest reading each mentor text aloud followed by a student-led rigorous discussion using the provided discussion questions.  As always, educators know their students best and will know how to address these issues in the classroom in a developmentally appropriate and meaningful way.

  • Using a standardized evaluation can be valuable for reporting measurable data to school leaders, district administrators, and school board members. The DESSA-mini assessments included with every Emozi® classroom implementation package allow each student’s progress to be measured. Simply complete the brief assessment form for each student at the beginning of the school year and again at the end. The online user guide provides instructions for interpreting the results.

  • Emozi® lessons include tips and strategies to help teachers use the program with students who are English learners. Differentiation Strategies are also included, helping teachers extend and enrich routines to ensure that all students receive developmentally appropriate SEL instruction.

  • To keep parents and caregivers informed and engaged, each classroom implementation package includes online access to a set of send-home letters in English, French, and Spanish that follow selected lessons. In addition, many lessons include a Home Connection activity designed to initiate family interactions.

  • Student Guides and DESSA-mini forms should be replenished as needed. Additional copies of the SCOPE Poster and Mentor Texts are also available. Complete classroom implementation packages and individual program components can be purchased in our online store.
